Three foods will naturally help replace lost collagen in your body – vital to help maintain healthy, wrinkle-free skin, according to an expert. The body naturally produces less collagen as you age, part of the process which sees your skin become less tight and smooth.

Experts say that while you can’t hold the process back completely, you can slow it down, and maintain healthier looking skin for longer. Georgi Grogan, Nutritional Health Coach & Founder of Sixways, told GB News there are three foods you should be adding to your diet for skin health.

Georgi recommends fish, nuts and seeds and foods high in vitamin C. Georgi said: “Fish is considered one of the best sources of collagen primarily because it contains a type of collagen known as marine collagen. Marine collagen is derived from the skin, scales and bones of fish and is highly bioavailable, meaning it is easily absorbed and utilised by the body.

“These amino acids play a crucial role in maintaining skin elasticity, hydration and overall skin health.”

And Georgi recommends berries as a source of vitamin C, adding: “They’re packed with antioxidants and vitamin C which helps to protect collagen from damage while supporting its synthesis.”

Nuts and seeds can be used as a snack or added to meals. Georgi said: “Almonds and walnuts provide zinc, copper and other minerals that help to aid collagen formation, encourage hair growth and support glowing skin from within.

Georgi also says that refined sugar can lead your body into a process which damages collagen and elastin – so you should avoid food and drinks high in processed sugars. And ultra-processed foods are high in fats and sugars that increase inflammation and ‘the breakdown of collagen’.

Georgi also said you should avoid alcohol, which dehydrates the skin and stops you from absorbing vital nutrients.
