One of Columbia’s most unique food trucks will be wheeling into its own restaurant space this week.

Dada Döner, which specializes in Turkish street food, will open a brick-and-mortar spot at 1201 E. Broadway on Monday. The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, according to its Facebook page.

Launched last year by Vahap Ulker and his team, the truck has focused on a simple menu with simple ingredients, all springing from a desire to foster joy and community around food.

Chicken döner, the central item on the truck’s menu, is cooked on a vertical rotisserie, then served in wraps, on sandwiches or as part of a plate with rice and a salad.

The dish dates back a couple centuries to the Turkish city of Bursa, Ulker told the Tribune last year, and invites comparison to similar cuisine from other countries: al pastor in Mexican food, gyros in Greek cuisine or shawarma, he noted.

At the restaurant, lamb and beef döner will also be on the menu, Ulker said in an email this week. The space will also serve cigkofte, which he described as a “vegan meatball wrap made with bulgur wheat and pomegranate molasses.”

Ulker’s operation has also invested time and attention in developing an array of yogurt-based sauces to complement the meat, including a white sauce, a curry sauce and a spicy option featuring Turkish hot peppers.

The Dada Döner truck will still serve customers, in addition to the six-day-a-week restaurant. Learn more about the truck, restaurant and future developments on its Facebook page.
