According to the American Heart Association, regular consumption of raw tomatoes eases hypertension by at least 36 per cent.

In the study, which involved more than 7,000 adults between ages 55-80, researchers in Spain found

that eating the equivalent of one large tomato every single day significantly cut high blood pressure risk. 1

Tomatoes are one of the most consumed, widely available, and affordable vegetables across the world.

In a recent study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a few men and women were followed over three years. Over 82 per cent already had high blood pressure at the beginning of the study along with high-risk factors like diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, obesity, and a family history of early-onset cardiovascular disease.

After putting them on a daily tomato-heavy diet which included salads and juices, scientists calculated a significant drop in the diastolic measure. 2

Experts also believe tomatoes have specific minerals and compounds like lycopene that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, lowering blood pressure levels and protecting your arteries from atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular diseases.

Studies have shown that higher lycopene intake and concentrations in the body are associated with lower LDL-cholesterol levels.

Delicious ways to incorporate tomatoes into your diet

Nutritionists say tomatoes are super versatile and come in so many different forms – from fresh to sun-dried, pastes, purees, and even juices. Any meal throughout the day can have tomatoes incorporated in various ways, including:

  • Use them as topping for scrambled eggs or omelets
  • Salsa for snacks
  • The base for spicy shakshuka
  • Virgin Bloody Mary drink
  • Cherry tomato salad with cucumbers
  • Sun-dried tomatoes with pasta
  • Pizza topping

Other potassium-rich heart-healthy foods to incorporate

Other potassium-rich foods that are part of a heart-healthy, antihypertensive diet include:

  • Avocados
  • Yogurt
  • Bananas
  • Oranges and orange juice
  • Spinach
  • Raisins
  • Tuna
  • Beets

Doctors say too much potassium can be harmful for individuals with kidney disorders, which are frequently co-occurring in individuals with high blood pressure.

The kidneys which are responsible for removing potassium from the blood, can lead to hyperkalemia, a severe condition related to potassium buildup in the body, if they are not able to function properly.
