TV doctor shares five foods that ‘may help promote healthy hair growth’ – The Mirror

The key to luscious long locks may be down to what you put on your plate.

Hair loss and thinning hair affects millions of men and women in the UK alone and can seriously affect one’s self-confidence. ITV’s Dr Amir Khan, who frequently appears on shows like Lorraine, recently explained the common problem can be caused by a slew of factors – from hormonal issues including an underactive thyroid to autoimmune or skin conditions.

However, once he has ‘ruled out any treatable causes’, the doctor will ask his patients what food they’re eating. So, before you pop on a plane to Turkey for a cheap hair transplant, it may be worth checking your diet.

“There’s no one food that’s going to fix your hair growth,” the expert told his Instagram followers. “However, eating a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals may help promote hair growth.

“More research is needed in this [area] but here are some tips… Eggs may help. They contain high levels of protein which is what hair is mainly made up of and something called biotin which is essential for the hair protein, keratin.”

The doctor hailed eggs for also containing zinc (0.53 milligrams in one large hard-boiled egg) and selenium, which he says can ‘support healthy hair growth’. Dr Khan also recommends adding berries to your diet, describing them as ‘ace’.

“[Berries] contain vitamin C which is needed for collagen production which can strengthen hair and lots of antioxidants which can help protect hair from damage,” he added. Eating dark green leafy veg like kale and broccoli is also advised – as these contain folic acid, iron, vitamin A and vitamin C.

Dr Khan also raved about Omega3 fatty acids often found in fish, including salmon, as well as walnuts and flax seeds. “Nuts and seeds also contain vitamin E which is thought to be a hair-healthy antioxidant,” he explained.

According to the NHS, it is normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs every single day – which you may not even notice. However, sometimes hair loss can be a warning sign of a medical condition such as an iron deficiency. If you’re worried about hair loss, contact your GP.
