LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – A national poll from University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital finds that one-third of parents think the standard American diet is healthy for children ages three to ten.

Parents noted challenges in getting their children to eat vegetables, and three in five parents said they would make something different. Despite believing they are healthier, fewer than 10% of parents have tried alternate diets for their children, such as Mediterranean or vegetarian.

“We found in the poll this month that almost 50% of parents indicated that they believe the Mediterranean diet is healthy, and about 1/3 of parents believe that a vegetarian diet is healthy,” said Dr. Susan Woolford from University of Michigan Health. “However, only about 9% have tried the Mediterranean diet, and fewer have tried a vegetarian diet. Despite the fact that the evidence suggests that these diets can help us avoid many illnesses.”

Dr. Woolford said a great way to get children interested in healthy choices is to include them in grocery shopping.
