Uber Eats Launches Driverless Food Delivery with Waymo – Food On Demand
If you’re in the Phoenix area, your next Uber Eats order may be delivered via a driverless car.
The company announced it’s now offering meal delivery through Waymo’s autonomous vehicles.
The move is part of a multi-year partnership that kicked off in Phoenix in October when Uber’s ride-hailing service began offering robotaxi trips through Waymo.
Autonomous deliveries are only available in Chandler, Tempe and Mesa from select merchants such as Princess Pita, Filinerto’s and BoSa Donuts. Plans are to eventually expand services to more locations.
How it works
When placing an order, consumers will see a prompt in the Uber Eats app that says, “Autonomous vehicles may deliver your order.” An option is given to opt out at checkout if consumers prefer to have items delivered by a courier.
Upon arrival, consumers receive an in-app notification to take their phone, unlock the vehicle and collect their order.
Overall delivery price could end up cutting costs, as the service only charges standard fees without tips.
According to a statement from Uber, its ongoing partnership with Waymo’s autonomous, fully electric cars, “reflects companies’ mission to encourage zero-emission trips and unlock greater innovation for consumers and merchants in Phoenix and beyond.”
This marks Uber’s seventh city for autonomous deliveries, including pilots with technology partners Serve Robotics, Cartken, Nuro and Motional.
