Study Reveals How Plant-Based Diet Can Reduce the Impact of Colorectal and Prostate Cancer – One Green Planet

Recent research suggests that a simple dietary adjustment could significantly impact the risk and progression of two common cancers, prostate and colorectal. The findings, published in the International Journal of Cancer and JAMA Network Open, shed light on the profound influence of plant-based diets on cancer outcomes.

A comprehensive review, pooling data from numerous studies, revealed a striking correlation between plant-rich diets and a reduced risk of mortality from colorectal cancer. Conversely, unhealthy dietary patterns, including high consumption of sugary drinks, were associated with an elevated risk of mortality. The message is clear: loading up on fruits and vegetables may offer a protective shield against colorectal cancer.

Similarly, in a study focusing on prostate cancer, researchers found that men with the highest intake of plant-based foods experienced a lower risk of cancer progression. This study, spanning over two thousand men, underscored the potential benefits of incorporating more plant foods into daily meals.

Notably, Mediterranean and plant-based diets emerged as heroes in the fight against cancer. Individuals adhering to these dietary patterns exhibited a reduced risk of mortality compared to those consuming “Western” diets. Specific foods like whole grains and coffee showcased protective effects, while sugary drinks posed detrimental risks.

Dr. Helen Croker, co-author of the review, emphasized the significance of these findings in shaping dietary recommendations for cancer patients and survivors. She said, “This comprehensive and rigorous review of the current state of evidence offers useful guidance on some of the diet and lifestyle factors that could improve cancer survival, and potentially help people living with and beyond cancer enjoy longer, healthier lives.”

The study on prostate cancer further highlighted the impact of plant-based diets on cancer progression. Men consuming more plant foods demonstrated a substantial decrease in cancer progression risk, with each additional serving of fruits and vegetables contributing to a healthier outcome.

While the results are promising, researchers stress the need for further investigation to validate these findings and establish robust dietary guidelines. Nonetheless, the implication is clear: embracing a plant-based diet may serve as a powerful strategy in the battle against cancer.
